The UGG brand, by contrast, was born in the United States: the Australian surfer Brian Smith, together with Doug Jensen, registered it in 1978 in Santa Monica. In 1995 Deckers Brands bought the business and took it international, and in 2016, following the ACCC inquiry, it changed 'UGG Australia' to 'UGG' and positions the brand as Californian. Its constant signature is twinface sheepskin: wool on the inside and a smooth surface on the outside.
