New Balance emerged in 1906 in Boston, Massachusetts, when William J. Riley, an English immigrant, founded the New Balance Arch Support Company to make insoles and orthopaedic footwear. The idea of a three-point support, the origin of the brand's name, came from observing the three-pronged balance mechanism of chickens' feet. For decades the firm sold arch supports to people who spent long hours on their feet, until in 1960 it launched the Trackster, its first running shoe, with a rippled sole and the first available in several widths. In 1972 came the "N" logo, whose diagonal conveys movement and whose solid base conveys stability. New Balance is one of the few major sports brands to keep its own factories in the United States, in Massachusetts and Maine, and in the United Kingdom, in Flimby (Cumbria) since 1982, an unusual manufacturing footprint sustained for more than four decades.
