From a family workshop to a 20th-century design icon
The Moon Boot story begins in a small footwear workshop in the Veneto: Giancarlo Zanatta inherited the workshop from his father and in 1960 formalised it as Calzaturificio Tecnica SpA, expanding production towards mountain footwear. In 1969, after the arrival of Apollo 11, he designed an après-ski inspired by the boots of NASA astronauts, with a thermal lining of nylon and expanded polyurethane that made the boot lighter than the leather of the time. The official launch came in 1970 at the Milan trade fair. Over time, the Moon Boot went beyond the world of skiing and entered the permanent collection of the MoMA in New York and of the Louvre as one of the symbols of 20th-century design. In 2017, the Italmobiliare group acquired 40% of Tecnica Group.
