Max Mara was born in 1951 in Reggio Emilia, when Achille Maramotti —raised among dressmakers, with his mother and great-grandmother devoted to sewing, and trained in Rome and Parma— founded his own house in the city where he was born. His bet was a restrained Italian luxury, focused on perfect cut and on noble materials such as wool and cashmere, with which he redefined the professional wardrobe for women through coats, suits and a design of contained lines. From that tailoring discipline came his most famous piece: the 101801 coat, created in 1981 in 90% virgin wool and 10% cashmere, with a kimono-cut sleeve and barely any trim, today regarded as the brand's most recognisable model. Over the years, the Maramotti family grew the project into a group with sister lines such as Sportmax and Weekend Max Mara, but the wool and cashmere coat remains the hallmark of the house.
